The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has postponed the start of the 2026 Commonwealth Games National Trials by 24 hours to ensure that athletes based in the United States, who were affected by severe weather disruptions, are able to participate.
The trials, originally scheduled to take place from June 20 to 22 at the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) Sports Complex in Lagos, will now hold from June 21 to 23 at the same venue.
The decision followed an emergency board meeting in Lagos, chaired by AFN President Chief Tonobok Okowa, after reports confirmed that several Nigerian athletes in the United States were unable to travel due to flight disruptions.
According to the federation, heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and flash flooding across parts of the United States—particularly in cities such as Atlanta, Montgomery, and Alabama—led to widespread flight cancellations and prevented some athletes from departing as scheduled.
The affected athletes subsequently appealed for a short extension to allow them to complete their travel arrangements and compete in the trials, which serve as the primary selection event for Team Nigeria ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
In response, the AFN approved a one-day adjustment to the schedule, describing the decision as fair and inclusive, aimed at ensuring all eligible athletes have an equal opportunity to compete for national team selection.
The federation also expressed appreciation to athletes already in Lagos for their understanding and cooperation, while extending best wishes to those still en route.
With the revised schedule now confirmed, the trials are expected to feature some of Nigeria’s top track and field athletes competing for places on the national squad for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
