In a bid to enhance performance and physical conditioning, the AFN announced that the team will be placed on a special nutritional plan throughout the duration of the camp. According to officials, the plan is aimed at boosting energy levels, aiding recovery, and ensuring optimal fitness ahead of the continental meet in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
On the final day of the trials, held under poor weather conditions, standout performances were recorded across both age categories. In the men’s U20 400m final, Gafar Badmus emerged victorious with a time of 45.78 seconds. He was followed by David Akhalu, who clocked a personal best of 46.34 seconds, while Ezekiel Eno secured third place in 46.42 seconds.
In the U18 girls’ 200m event, Miracle Oluebube Ezechukwu dominated the race, winning in 24.06 seconds. Rosemary Nwankwo and Mariam Jegede came in second and third respectively. Meanwhile, in the U20 women’s 200m, Success Oyibu upset the favourites to win in 23.80 seconds, ahead of Lucy Nwankwo (24.15s) and National Sports Festival gold medallist Cynthia Chioma Nweke (24.20s).
Perfect Faye posted a personal best of 21.68 seconds to win the U18 boys’ 200m event, narrowly beating Ajibare Ibrahim (21.71s) and Destiny Egbon (21.98s). In the U20 men’s category, John Caleb completed a sprint double after winning the 100m earlier, finishing the 200m in 21.37 seconds.
Several field and throwing events also witnessed impressive performances, with technical officials praising the depth of talent on display.
Despite heavy rainfall disrupting parts of the competition, the trials were concluded successfully under the watchful eyes of AFN President Chief Tonobok Okowa, Technical Director Gabriel Okon, and Head Coach Solomon Aliyu.
The CAA U18/U20 Championships will take place in August, with Nigeria expected to field a strong team. The AFN says it is committed to giving the athletes the best possible platform to succeed.
