AFN Releases Strong Squad for 2026 World Athletics Ultimate Championships

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has named a formidable squad for the 2026 World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest, Hungary, as the country targets a strong showing at the global event.

The squad combines experienced campaigners with emerging stars who have distinguished themselves on the international stage, giving Nigeria a strong representation across individual and mixed relay events.

Former world record holder Tobi Amusan headlines the women’s contingent, with the accomplished hurdler listed to compete in the women’s 100m hurdles and the mixed 4x100m relay.

In the men’s sprint, Kanyinsola Ajayi will fly Nigeria’s flag in the 100m, while Udodi Onwuzurike is listed for the 200m and mixed 4x100m relay.

Ella Onojuwvevwo will compete in the women’s 400m, with Ezekiel Nathaniel set to contest the men’s 400m hurdles.

Nigeria will also be represented in the mixed 4x100m relay by Alaba Akintola, Favour Ashe, Miracle Ezechukwu, Onwuzurike, Rosemary Nwankwo and Amusan.

The composition of the squad reflects the depth of Nigeria’s current athletics programme, with several members having featured prominently at major international championships.

Ajayi and Ashe bring considerable sprinting pedigree, while Amusan’s experience and pedigree in the hurdles are expected to strengthen Nigeria’s medal ambitions.

Nathaniel and Onwuzurike also add significant quality to the team, while the inclusion of Ezechukwu and Nwankwo further underlines the federation’s blend of established and emerging talents.

The Budapest championships will therefore provide another major platform for Nigeria’s athletes to test themselves against the world’s best and potentially improve on the country’s recent performances on the international stage.

The AFN will be hoping the selected athletes can convert their individual quality into strong performances and podium finishes when competition begins in the Hungarian capital.
