AFN President Okowa bags CAA Senior VP

Posted : 17 May 2026

Nigeria has further reinforced its growing presence in African sports administration following the election of Athletics Federation of Nigeria President, Tonobok Okowa, as Senior Vice President of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA).

Okowa secured the position after emerging victorious in a keenly contested Executive Council election, defeating South Africa’s Dlamini Dakhele and Bruno Konga in the voting process.

The AFN President polled six votes to finish ahead of Dakhele, who garnered four votes, while Konga received one vote from the 11 ballots cast.

The development is being celebrated as another significant milestone for Nigerian athletics, reflecting the country’s increasing influence in shaping the future of the sport across the continent.

Okowa’s elevation to the CAA’s second-highest office is expected to give Nigeria a stronger voice in critical areas concerning athletics development, including athlete welfare, grassroots programmes, and continental competitions.

His emergence also comes amid Nigeria’s recent rise in athletics, with improved performances recorded at both African and global championships.

Stakeholders within the athletics community have described the achievement as well-deserved, noting that Okowa has remained actively involved in efforts aimed at repositioning Nigerian athletics in recent years.

The latest appointment also adds to his growing profile in African sports leadership, as he currently serves as President of CAA Region 2.

This historic administrative victory cements Nigeria's leadership role within the continental athletics governing body. With Okowa now positioned in the executive hierarchy, the nation is strategically aligned to drive progressive policies that will benefit athletes across the region. Sustaining this institutional influence will remain pivotal in fostering long-term developmental growth and securing future podium successes for African track and field.
