AFN Invites 29 Athletes To Abuja Camp Ahead Of 2026 Commonwealth Games

Posted : 25 June 2026

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has invited 29 athletes to a national training camp in Abuja as preparations continue for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. The camp officially opens on June 25 and will serve as a key phase of Team Nigeria's build-up to the competition.

The selected squad consists of 14 male athletes and 15 female athletes. Most of the athletes earned their places through strong performances at the national trials held at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos between June 20 and 22. Athletes who missed the trials because of visa-related challenges were also considered based on their performances during the current season.

Among the notable names invited are women's 100m hurdles star Tobi Amusan, long jump specialist Ese Brume, shot put athlete Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, and high jumper Temitope Adeshina. The squad also includes leading sprinters such as Favour Ashe, Udodi Onwuzuruike, Kayinsola Ajayi, and Rosemary Chukwuma.

Nigeria is expected to compete in 18 athletics events at the Commonwealth Games, which will take place from July 23 to August 2 in Glasgow. The AFN has placed special emphasis on relay events, including the men's 4x100m relay, women's 4x100m relay, and mixed 4x400m relay. These events have traditionally provided medal opportunities for Nigeria at major international championships.

The Abuja camp will allow coaches and technical officials to assess athletes' fitness levels, improve relay exchanges, and strengthen team chemistry before the Games. The federation believes the camping programme will help athletes reach peak condition ahead of the competition.

AFN President Tonobok Okowa has expressed confidence in the squad and urged athletes to remain focused throughout the preparation period. The federation is targeting a strong performance in Glasgow as Nigeria seeks to add to its rich athletics history at the Commonwealth Games.
