Adaobi Tabugbo Secures Brilliant Bronze Medal at Pure Athletics Elite Sprint Meet in Florida

Fast-rising Nigerian track star Adaobi Tabugbo secured a podium finish on Sunday afternoon after clinching a bronze medal at the Pure Athletics Elite Sprint Meet in Clermont, Florida. The highly rated athlete finished third in a competitive women’s 100-meter hurdles final. The sprint hurdles field featured an elite lineup of competitors from across the Americas and the Caribbean.

Tabugbo crossed the finish line with a wind-aided time of 12.93 seconds. A strong tailwind of +2.8 meters per second assisted the athletes during the race. This speed exceeded the legal limit of +2.0 meters per second. The excessive wind assistance means the times recorded by the top finishers will remain ineligible for official rankings or personal record purposes.

Saint Lucia's rising star Aasia Laurencin won the intense race after storming past the finish line in 12.73 seconds to claim the gold medal. Paola Vazquez of Puerto Rico edged the Nigerian representative by a razor-thin margin to secure the silver medal. Vazquez officially took second place with a time of 12.93 seconds; her reaction time at the line narrowly placed her ahead of Tabugbo.

The third-place finish further elevates Tabugbo’s growing profile on the international athletics circuit following her recent success at the African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana. The 24-year-old hurdler previously won a bronze medal in the individual hurdles event in Accra. She also played a key role in helping the Nigerian women’s 4x100-meter relay squad capture continental gold.

The former University of Central Florida standout continues to refine her technical execution as she builds momentum for upcoming major international tournaments. Her strong performance in Florida serves as a vital tune-up event ahead of the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games scheduled to take place in Glasgow, Scotland. Tabugbo remains focused on early preparations to challenge for global honors on the track.
