Abuja Road Race Targets Bigger International Field as Half Marathon Returns

Posted : 08 October 2026

The Federal Capital Territory will again become a hub for road running when the 3rd PremiumTrust Bank Abuja City International Half Marathon holds on Saturday, Nov. 14.

Organised by Nilayo Sports Management Limited, the 21-kilometre race is expected to attract elite and recreational runners, fitness enthusiasts and corporate teams from Nigeria and other countries.

The organisers said registration is currently ongoing online, while physical registration will commence later at a venue proposed to be the PremiumTrust Bank.

Prospective participants have been encouraged to register early to give them sufficient time to prepare for the demanding 21-kilometre course.

The race is being staged under the continued partnership between PremiumTrust Bank, the sole sponsor, and Nilayo Sports Management Limited, following the success of the inaugural edition in 2024.

Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Nilayo Sports Management Limited, Mrs. Yetunde Olopade, said the organisers were determined to raise the standard of the 2026 edition.

Olopade said particular attention would be given to athlete welfare, medical services, security, logistics and route management, alongside entertainment for spectators and families.

She added that entertainment zones and other activities along the route would provide a more engaging experience for supporters while creating a vibrant atmosphere for the runners.

The Abuja City International Half Marathon has gradually developed beyond a competitive road race, becoming a platform for promoting fitness, healthy living, community participation and sports tourism.

Its route through some of Abuja’s notable landmarks also gives participants an opportunity to experience the capital while showcasing the city as a destination capable of hosting major sporting events.

For Nigerian athletes, the race offers another important opportunity for home-based long-distance runners to compete against international opposition, improve their competitive exposure and pursue valuable ranking points.

The event is also expected to generate opportunities for businesses and individuals involved in hospitality, transportation, merchandising, volunteering and other services linked to sports events.

With Abuja expected to welcome runners and spectators on Nov. 14, organisers are targeting an edition that will strengthen the race’s reputation while further positioning road running as an important component of Nigeria’s athletics development.

The 2026 edition is therefore poised to blend elite competition with fitness, entertainment and tourism as Abuja once again takes centre stage in Nigeria’s road-racing calendar.
