The countdown has officially begun as Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, prepares to welcome the continent’s rising stars for the 3rd African U18 and U20 Athletics Championships, just 29 days away.
The championship, set to take place from July 16 to 20, 2025, will be held at the newly upgraded MKO Abiola International Stadium. It promises to showcase speed, strength, and emerging talent from across Africa.
More than 50 countries are expected to participate, with national contingents scheduled to begin arriving from July 12. The Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) has fully endorsed the venue and facilities, confirming Abeokuta’s readiness to host a high-calibre continental event.
All eyes will be on Nigeria as it hosts the next generation of athletics talent, following in the footsteps of national legends such as Falilat Ogunkoya, Mary Onyali, Olusoji Fasuba, Deji Aliyu, and Yusuf Alli—icons who first made their mark on junior stages like this.
In addition to the athletics event, Ogun State is also preparing to host the upcoming WAFU B U-17 Football Championship. These developments underscore the state’s rising profile as a premier destination for major sporting events in West Africa.
The Ogun State Government has pledged maximum support for the successful hosting of the championship, reinforcing its commitment to sports development and youth engagement.
