The 3rd CAA U18/U20 African Athletics Championships came to a thunderous close in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Sunday, July 20, with a vibrant showcase of African music, culture, and sportsmanship.
Top Nigerian music stars KCee and 9ice were the center of attention as they lit up the MKO Abiola Stadium with electrifying Afrobeat performances, thrilling the packed crowd with pulsating energy and lyrical flair. Their dynamic artistry brought an unforgettable close to a championship that delivered on every front.
On the track, the final day was packed with drama and dazzling performances. Team Nigeria, spurred on by passionate home support, battled for final medals in an effort to top the medal table. Despite their valiant efforts, South Africa emerged as overall champions, securing the most medals and finishing at the top of the standings.
Reflecting on the success of the event, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, hailed the tournament as “a masterpiece that showcased Africa’s finest talents and the power of sports to unite.”
“This championship was more than a sporting event; it was a celebration of Africa’s youth, energy, and future. From the competition to the culture, it was a masterpiece in every sense. We thank the CAA, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Ogun State Government, and all members of the Local Organizing Committee led by Hon. Bukola Olopade for making this vision a reality,” Dikko stated.
Hon. Bukola Olopade, Director General of the NSC and LOC head, also praised the championship's organizational success, highlighting the warm hospitality of Abeokuta and the unwavering support from the NSC chairman.
“We’ve not only proven our capacity to host world-class sporting events but have also set a new standard for youth championships across the continent. The energy, the culture, the unity—this is what Africa stands for. Our gratitude goes to the Chairman of the NSC, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and Governor Dapo Abiodun for their immense support,” Olopade said.
The high point of the closing day came when Team Nigeria solidified its dominance in relay events by winning the women’s U20 4x400m gold medal. The quartet of Odot Udoh, Toheebat Jimoh, Anita Enaruna, and Favour Onyah delivered a flawless performance, smoothly passing the baton and leaving rivals South Africa and Zimbabwe behind.
With participation from over 35 countries and thousands of fans in attendance, the Abeokuta 2025 CAA U18/U20 African Athletics Championships will be remembered as a benchmark for future youth athletics competitions—celebrated not just for sporting excellence but for showcasing the unity, culture, and pride of Africa.
