Abeokuta 10KM Race Set for All-Nigerian Showdown

More than 3,000 Nigerian runners are expected to converge on Abeokuta on Saturday for the fifth edition of the Abeokuta 10KM Race.

The race, organised by Nilayo Sports Management Limited, will take place on Oct. 3, with organisers reserving this year’s edition exclusively for indigenous Nigerian athletes.

The 10km event will begin at 7 a.m. from Macjob Grammar School, Onikolobo, and pass through designated routes across the Ogun State capital before finishing at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Kuto.

The strong registration figures have generated growing excitement ahead of the race, with residents, sports enthusiasts and stakeholders expected to line the route to support the competitors.

The 2026 edition marks a departure from previous editions, which featured foreign athletes, as organisers seek to provide Nigerian runners with a dedicated platform to compete for honours and prize money on home soil.

With the race just days away, attention will now turn to the leading contenders and the battle for supremacy in what promises to be a competitive all-Nigerian field.

The event is also expected to add colour to Abeokuta’s sporting calendar while providing an avenue for athletes from different parts of the country to showcase their endurance and road-running abilities.
