8 Days to Go: Team Nigeria Brims with Confidence as King Charles III to Grace Glasgow 2026 Opening Ceremony

Posted : 15 July 2026

With just eight days to the start of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, excitement is building as Team Nigeria intensifies its final preparations for one of the biggest multi-sport events in the Commonwealth.

Nigeria's sprint sensation, Favour Ashe, has expressed confidence in Team Nigeria's ability to deliver impressive performances in Glasgow, saying the athletes are well prepared, highly motivated, and determined to make the nation proud.

"We have prepared well, and everyone is focused on giving their best. Team Nigeria has a strong tradition at the Commonwealth Games, and we are confident we can compete for medals and make Nigerians proud," Ashe said.

The Opening Ceremony will take place on Thursday, July 23, at The Hydro in Glasgow, where Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla will join thousands of athletes, officials, volunteers, and spectators from across the Commonwealth to officially declare open the XXIII Commonwealth Games.

More than 3,000 athletes representing 74 Commonwealth nations and territories will compete for 215 gold medals across 10 sports during the 11-day Games.

One of the major highlights of the ceremony will be King Charles III's official declaration of the Games. The King will read the message placed inside the King's Baton on Commonwealth Day, March 10, 2025, at Buckingham Palace before the Baton Relay began its historic journey.

The ceremony will also feature British cycling legend Sir Chris Hoy, the first Batonbearer, celebrating the enduring values and spirit of the Commonwealth Games.

The King's Baton Relay has completed its landmark 500-day journey across all 74 Commonwealth nations and territories, making it the longest relay in Commonwealth Games history.

For the first time, all 74 Batons will be reunited in Glasgow, symbolising the unity, diversity, and shared values of the Commonwealth.

Throughout the relay, the Commonwealth Clean Ocean Plastics Campaign, delivered in partnership with the Royal Commonwealth Society, engaged communities across member nations in environmental conservation initiatives aimed at preventing one million pieces of plastic from entering Commonwealth waters.

Team Nigeria heads to Glasgow determined to build on its proud Commonwealth Games legacy, with athletes expected to challenge for medals across athletics, boxing, weightlifting, para sports, and several other events as the country seeks another successful outing on the international stage.

With confidence high and preparations nearing completion, Team Nigeria will be aiming to deliver another memorable performance when competition begins in Glasgow. The athletes will look to uphold the nation's proud tradition at the Commonwealth Games and inspire Nigerians with their achievements.
