60 Nigerian Student-Athletes Depart for Inaugural African School Sports Championship

Posted : 25 July 2025

A contingent of 60 student-athletes has departed Nigeria for Annaba, Algeria, to compete in the inaugural African School Sports Championship.

Kola Daniel, Special Assistant (Media) to the Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), made this known in Lagos.

According to him, the competition will take place from July 26 to August 5.

He stated that Nigeria will participate in 10 sports, including athletics, swimming, football, taekwondo, and beach canoe.

Other sports include badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, cycling, and table tennis.

Daniel quoted the Director-General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, as describing the event as a milestone in Nigeria’s grassroots sports development journey.

“This championship means a lot to us because it is about planting seeds," Olopade said.

“These student-athletes are ambassadors of our future.

“We are deliberate in creating pathways from the classroom to the global stage.”

Daniel noted that the athletes were previously camped at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja for intensive training.

According to him, the competition—organized by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA)—aims to instill Olympic values in African youths and provide a structured platform for talent identification, integration, and development at the grassroots level.

In line with the event’s guidelines, all participating athletes submitted valid school certificates. Additionally, the NSC, in collaboration with the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), secured parental authorizations for all underage athletes in coordination with their families.

Daniel emphasized that Nigeria’s participation reflects the Federal Government’s broader commitment to grassroots development and youth empowerment through sports.
