4 Days to Go: NSC Congratulates Ajayi on London Diamond League Victory

Posted : 20 July 2026

With just four days remaining until the start of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, the National Sports Commission (NSC) has congratulated Team Nigeria sprint sensation Kayinsola Ajayi following his outstanding victory in the men's 100m at the London Diamond League on Saturday.

Ajayi delivered another world-class performance, equalling the Nigerian men's 100m national record of 9.84 seconds (-0.7) for the third time this season. The impressive run saw him defeat reigning World Championship silver medallist Oblique Seville of Jamaica, who finished second in 9.87 seconds.

The victory further reinforces Ajayi's status as one of Nigeria's strongest medal prospects heading into the Commonwealth Games. His performance sends a powerful message ahead of Glasgow 2026, where he will proudly represent Team Nigeria in one of the Games' most eagerly anticipated events.

Also representing Nigeria at the London Diamond League was Ezekiel Nathaniel, who finished fourth in the men's 400m hurdles with a time of 48.30 seconds. World record holder Karsten Warholm won the race in a meeting record of 46.61 seconds, finishing ahead of Emil Agyekum (47.45) and Abderrahman Samba (48.10).

The National Sports Commission commended both athletes for their impressive performances on the global stage, noting that their current form provides further confidence in Team Nigeria's preparations as the countdown to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games enters its final days.

The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games will be held from July 23 to August 2, bringing together more than 3,000 athletes from across the Commonwealth to compete in 10 sports.

Team Nigeria will be aiming to build on its proud Commonwealth Games legacy, with the National Sports Commission expressing confidence that the country's athletes are well prepared to challenge for medals and make the nation proud on the international stage.
