3rd CAA U-18/U-20 Championships: Ademola, Clement Lead 92-Member Team Nigeria to Abeokuta

Posted : 16 July 2025

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has officially named a 92-member team to represent the country at the 3rd CAA U-18/U-20 African Athletics Championships, which kicks off today at the Moshood Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

In a joint statement signed by AFN President, Chief Tonobok Okowa, and Technical Director, Gabriel Okon, the team list was confirmed on Tuesday, following a two-week training camp held after the national trials in Sagamu.

Of the 92 athletes, 51 are male and 41 female. The squad includes 40 athletes competing in the U-18 category—23 boys and 17 girls—and 52 in the U-20 category—29 boys and 23 girls.

A breakdown of the events is as follows:

  • U-18:
    • Girls: 17 athletes across 17 events
    • Boys: 22 athletes across 17 events
  • U-20:
  • Girls: 24 athletes across 18 events
  • Boys: 28 athletes across 19 events

Speaking on the team's composition, Gabriel Okon stated that the technical committee carefully assessed the athletes based on their strength, technical and tactical abilities, and the events where Nigeria holds competitive advantage.

“I’m confident that these athletes will make a strong impact. They are the future of Nigerian athletics—young, determined, and full of energy. The spirit in the camp is incredibly high,” Okon said.

AFN President Tonobok Okowa also expressed confidence in the team's readiness, urging them to perform with pride and passion.

“We’re not putting pressure to win at all costs, but we expect them to compete with zeal and determination,” he noted. “This is about laying a solid foundation for the future. Two years ago in Ndola, Zambia, we took 41 athletes and finished on the podium. This time, we are aiming for the top.”

Leading the team are captains Temitope Ademola and Victor Clement, who will captain the girls' and boys' squads respectively.

As Abeokuta lights up with Africa’s brightest young athletic talent, Team Nigeria’s large contingent signals serious intent to leave a lasting mark on the continental championship.
