2026 NDG: Team Delta Concludes State Trials for Athletes

Posted : 10 February 2026

Team Delta has concluded its trials for the athletics event ahead of the 2nd Niger Delta Games scheduled to hold in the ancient city of Benin from February 19.

The state trials, which held at the iconic Stephen Keshi International Stadium, Asaba, threw up several future stars who could rule the athletics world in the next five years.

Leading the pack is Faith Chukwuma, who sped to 22.34 seconds to finish on top after an initial melodrama that almost scuttled her chances.

Her finish is, however, threatened by a new kid on the block, Ejiro Peter from Ethiope West, who could push Chukwuma after placing second with a time of 24.03 seconds, with Chinonso Odika in third after clocking 24.18 seconds in the 200 meters female event.

The boys’ category also threw up new faces, with Osama Chibueze beating a packed field after clocking 20.85 seconds, followed by Rim Rukeh Fada, who posted 21.57 seconds, with Egbo Destiny finishing in third place after clocking 21.78 seconds.

However, it is the performance of Onoriode Peter, the younger brother of Ejiro Peter, that caught the eye, despite clocking 21.91 seconds and finishing in sixth place, as he showed great promise against his older competitors.

Team Delta's hopes of claiming a medal in the high jump were rekindled after new high jump sensation Praise Ikweki cleared 2.05 meters to finish on top.

Meanwhile, the trials continue tomorrow in Asaba, with athletes in the remaining fifteen sports jostling for a place in the team.

A closed camping program resumes immediately at the conclusion of the trials, which is expected to end on Thursday.
