The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has unveiled a strong 45-man contingent for the upcoming 2026 CAA Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, with the country banking on a mix of seasoned stars and exciting young talents to challenge for medals.
The Nigerian delegation comprises 25 female and 20 male athletes selected across track and field events as Team Nigeria intensifies preparations ahead of the continental championships and next year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
World record holder Tobi Amusan headlines the women’s team and is expected to lead Nigeria’s charge in the 100m hurdles alongside Adaobi Tabugbo and Janet Sunday.
Sprint star Rosemary Chukwuma, one of Nigeria’s standout performers this season, will compete in the women’s 100m and form part of the 4x100m relay squad with Miracle Ezechukwu, Maria-Thompson Omokwe and Tejiri Ugoh.
Nigeria will also rely on experienced campaigners such as Patience Okon George in the women’s 400m and relay events, while Ruth Usoro will spearhead the country’s long jump challenge. Hammer throw specialist Oyesade Olatoye is equally expected to contend strongly in the field events.
On the men’s side, Favour Ashe leads the sprint unit alongside Enoch Adegoke, Chidera Ezakor and Usheoritse Itsekiri as Nigeria targets podium finishes in both individual and relay races.
Shot put giant Chukwuebuka Enekwechi remains one of Nigeria’s brightest medal prospects after maintaining his status among Africa’s leading throwers, while Samson Nathaniel, Emmanuel Ojeli and Chidi Okezie will anchor the men’s 400m and relay teams.
The squad also features athletes competing in technical and field events, including Romeo Bernard in the long jump, Emmanuel Audu in the shot put and Adams Samuel Kure in the javelin.
With a balanced squad combining proven international performers and rising talents, Nigeria will aim to make a strong statement in Accra against the continent’s elite athletes.
The selection of this diverse group underscores Nigeria's commitment to maintaining its status as a dominant power in African athletics. By pairing established world-class champions with emerging prospects, the AFN is positioning the nation for a successful campaign that will set the tone for future global competitions.
