2026 African Athletics Championships: Nigerian women deliver golden treble in Accra

Posted : 17 May 2026

Team Nigeria’s women once again proved to be the nation’s strongest medal force, powering the country to all three gold medals won so far at the ongoing African Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana.

The highlight of another remarkable outing came in the women’s 4x100m relay where the Nigerian quartet of Rosemary Nwankwo, Jennifer Obi Chukwuka, Rosemary Chukwuma, and Miracle Ezechukwu delivered a sensational performance to win gold in a new Championship Record time of 42.94 seconds.

Nigeria fought off a fierce challenge from Liberia, who claimed silver, while host nation Ghana settled for bronze in front of a lively crowd at the University of Ghana Stadium.

The victory further underlined Nigeria’s dominance in the women’s sprint relay event, a legacy that dates back to 2008 when the country dethroned Ghana in Addis Ababa. Since then, Nigeria has lost the continental title only once, firmly establishing itself as Africa’s relay powerhouse.

The latest success also continues a growing trend of Nigerian women consistently stepping up for the nation at major international competitions.

From the Solidarity Games to the World Championships in Tokyo and the previous Commonwealth Games where Nigerian women accounted for all 12 gold medals won by Team Nigeria, the women have repeatedly delivered when it matters most.

While the women celebrated another golden moment, Nigeria’s men were left frustrated again in the 4x100m relay final.

The Nigerian men’s quartet settled for silver for the second straight edition after posting a time of 38.70 seconds. Ivory Coast secured gold in 38.52 seconds, while Ghana thrilled the home supporters with bronze in 38.74 seconds.

The Ghanaian team of Edwin Gadayi, Joseph-Paul Amoah, Ibrahim Fuseini, and Abdul-Rasheed Saminu produced a spirited run to finish on the podium in an electrifying race.

Nigeria’s wait for a men’s relay gold medal at the championships now stretches back to 2012 despite several impressive performances over the years.

Elsewhere, Divine Oladipupo narrowly missed out on another medal after finishing fourth in the women’s shot put with a best throw of 17.63m.

The athlete had earlier opened her championship campaign with a silver medal in the women’s discus event.

The remarkable outing in Accra reinforces the exceptional standard maintained by Nigeria's female athletes on the continental stage. While the men's relay team continues to narrow the gap for a future title, the women's record-breaking performance remains the cornerstone of the nation's current athletic success. Sustaining this momentum will be vital as the athletes prepare for upcoming global tournaments.
