The Nasarawa State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Kwanta Yakubu, undertook a comprehensive inspection tour of the facilities at the Government Comprehensive Special School, Lafia, designated for the closed camping of the State's athletes ahead of the rescheduled 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival.
During the inspection, Kwanta—accompanied by the Ministry's Permanent Secretary, Ibrahim Adamu Alhassan; Senior Special Assistants to Governor Abdullahi Sule on Youth and Students' Affairs and Sports Development, Shuaibu Sani and Hamza Moyi Ibrahim—assessed the readiness of the facilities to accommodate the athletes, focusing on accommodation, training equipment, medical facilities, and other essential amenities.
The Commissioner, who was taken around the facilities by the Head of the Government Comprehensive Special School, Lafia, Yakubu Andrew, expressed satisfaction with the progress made and assured that all necessary measures would be taken to provide the athletes with a conducive environment.
"Let me thank His Excellency, our Governor, for graciously approving funds for this closed camping exercise before the main Sports Festival in Ogun State. This is the first of its kind since the creation of the State in 1996.
"This camping is aimed at equipping our athletes and coaches for the competition ahead. It is taking place here at this wonderful and serene Special School, Lafia, which boasts state-of-the-art sports facilities.
"The accommodation, kitchen, health, sports facilities, and security architecture are all superb.
"Suffice it to say, we could host a national event here.
"The committees too are more than ready to drive positive transformation in the history of our sportsmen and women.
"Let me assure the good people of Nasarawa State that Team Nasarawa will not only participate in the National Sports Festival but will also return home with medals," the Commissioner stated.
In a related development, the Commissioner has constituted a Central Working Committee and several Sub-Committees to drive the State's quest for excellence at the national multi-sports biennial competition.
The Central Working Committee is headed by the Ministry's Permanent Secretary, Dr. Ibrahim Adamu Alhassan.
Director of Sports Organizing, Lawrence Shammah, will head the Camping Sub-Committee, with Haruna Adamu and Zabe Munyuren as members.
Director of Technical and Coaching, Mustapha Sani Bello, will spearhead the Coaching Sub-Committee, while the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Uba Musa, will chair the Athletes' Sub-Committee.
Additionally, the Head of the Ministry's Public Relations Unit, Eche Amos, will head the Media and Publicity Sub-Committee, with Baba Ojingwo, Fatima Musa, David Eze, and Nathaniel Nagyo Isaac as members. The Staff Officer of the Ministry, Madam Talatu Haruna, will be in charge of the Transport Sub-Committee, with Barnabas Samuel as a member.
The Head of Internal Audit of the Ministry, Hajiya Fatima Yamusa, is tasked with coordinating the Welfare Sub-Committee, with the Director of Admin and Supplies, Ms. Helen Ken Madaki, as a member.
The Medical Sub-Committee is headed by Dr. Akpan Nse Abasi, while Officer Kigbu Haruna of the Nigeria Police Force will coordinate the Security Sub-Committee, with Maidawa Enoch Sale as a member.
Both Senior Special Assistants to the Governor assigned to the Ministry are members of all the committees.
In his remarks, the Commissioner, Hon. Kwanta Yakubu, emphasized the importance of teamwork, discipline, and dedication in achieving success at the National Sports Festival and disclosed that the various committees will oversee the entire preparations and participation of the State's contingent at the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival, scheduled to be held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, from May 16 to 30, 2025. The tournament was postponed from 2024 to 2025 by the Federal Government of Nigeria due to unforeseen circumstances.
He urged athletes and coaches to take advantage of the closed camping exercise to fine-tune their skills and build team spirit, adding that Governor Abdullahi Sule has provided a conducive environment for the State's contingent to make a strong impression at the competition. He stressed that the administration of Governor Abdullahi Sule would reward athletes and coaches who distinguish themselves at the multi-sports meet.
Team Nasarawa will feature in twenty-two sports events, including Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Chess, Cycling, Darts, Golf, Hockey (Female), Judo, Karate, Kung-Fu Wushu, Table Tennis, Para Table Tennis, Tennis, Taekwondo, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Volleyball (Female), Ayo, Dambe, Para Athletics, and Deaf Athletics.
Thirty-six states of the Federation and the FCT, Abuja, are expected to participate in the Sports Festival, with over five thousand athletes and coaches expected to feature prominently in the biennial competition.
