2025 NSF: Team Edo's Ezeaku stuns tournament favourite, Adegoke, to win gold in 100m

Posted : 26 May 2025

He was not the tournament’s favourite, but Team Edo’s Chidera Ezeaku on Saturday stunned everyone to win the most coveted 100m sprint at the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival (NSF) held at the main bowl of the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta, Ogun.

Chidera Ezeaku finished with an unofficial time of 10.27 seconds to win the gold medal ahead of favourites such as Enoch Adegoke and Favour Ashe, who was disqualified for an alleged infraction.

Close behind Ezeaku for the silver medal were his compatriots from Edo: Enoch Adegoke, and Emmanuel Taiwo from Rivers, who won the bronze medal.

Speaking after his victory, Ezeaku attributed his success to intense preparation for the race.

“I can say that I was well prepared for the sports festival. What I needed to win the race was a good start from the blocks and to maintain my speed for the first 60 metres, then off I go.

“I have undergone a lot of training with my coach, which was not easy. I really needed to get this done, and it eventually came through.

“I am not scared of any of the athletes. What I will do now is go home and get my body fixed to push further.

“I have to prepare for the 4×100 race, which I believe will be a gold medal for Team Edo,” he said.

On what the future holds after his emergence as Nigeria’s fastest man, Ezeaku said he looks forward to greater challenges.

“This time around, it is a great future for me. I am not under any pressure. I just need to be focused, get everything done, and I will be good.

“Big thanks to Team Edo; they have been behind me since day one. Giving them the gold was not an easy feat because that was my promise from the start.

“The next thing for me now is the World Championship, and that is my focus for now,” he said.

The U.S.-based medal hopeful, Favour Ashe from Delta, was disqualified from the race over an alleged infraction.
