Clinton Opute, Team Delta's multiple gold medalist in the men's swimming events at the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival tagged Gateway Games, Ogun 2025, has set his sights on winning more gold medals despite having already shattered three records in the swimming competitions.
The Ukwuani Local Government swimming sensation broke the record in the men's 200 meters butterfly event, clocking 2:10.6 seconds to surpass his earlier record of 2:13.3 seconds.
The young swimmer, who also dominated the event at the National Youth Games, smashed the record in the 400 meters freestyle by reducing the time from 4:29.05 to 4:14.27 seconds. He also set a new record in the men's 200 meters individual medley, shaving off 2 seconds from the previous record of 2:16.06 seconds to 2:14.27 seconds.
The calm and confident swimming champion, who has won six gold medals and one silver medal so far in the ongoing games, said his quest to win more medals for Team Delta has not diminished. He hopes to claim more gold medals for the state, stressing that his aim is to help his state retain its title as National Sports Festival champions.
He hopes that his modest contribution to the state's medal tally will help it successfully defend its title.
The swimming events will continue tomorrow after officials declared today a rest day.
In another development, Team Delta’s female football team has advanced to the semi-finals after beating their Team Lagos counterparts 2-1 to advance from Group B alongside the National Under-17 female team. They will meet either hosts Team Ogun or Team Osun in the semi-final stage.
Team Delta’s female Abula squad also made it to the semi-finals after overcoming Team Oyo in two straight sets to advance into a medal position, as the team has set its sights on claiming the ultimate prize in the event.
