The captain of Team Rivers women’s volleyball team, Christiana Paul, said on Saturday that their gold medal hopes remain alive despite a shaky start to the tournament.
Paul, who spoke after her team's hard-fought 3-2 win over Team Lagos, disclosed that the team would perform better as the event reaches its final stage.
“We performed well overall. Team Lagos forced us to play differently. We struggled to impose our usual style on them.
“In the first half, they led us. Our passing and defense were shaky, and we didn’t perform as expected.
“We reviewed their past games and returned more confident, managing to control the match and dictate the pace.
“Most of the players who came off the bench really changed the game,” she noted.
Paul said the team was prepared for tougher games, despite the challenge posed by Team Lagos.
“This wasn’t the hardest team. Other teams here also aim to win the gold medal.
“It would be foolish to underestimate any team at this stage of the competition.
“Nevertheless, our pursuit of the gold medal in women’s volleyball remains on track and unwavering.
“We’re ready and waiting for our next opponents,” Paul said.
