Nunayo Travih, Director of Sports Development at the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), has assured that Team Lagos will surpass its previous medal haul at the ongoing 2024 National Sports Festival (NSF), tagged “Gateway Games.”
Travih gave the assurance in an interview while assessing the performance of the team so far.
The official medals table currently places Team Lagos in 8th position, with 7 gold, 10 silver, and 16 bronze medals — making a total of 33 medals.
Team Lagos finished in 5th position at the 2022 edition in Asaba, Delta State, with 40 gold, 56 silver, and 73 bronze medals — a total of 169 medals — just behind Oyo State, which had 43 gold medals.
Travih assured that the state contingent is well-equipped and motivated to compete with the top three teams on the 2024 medals table.
“So far, so good. I am impressed with the performance of Team Lagos. Once the main traditional sports commence, our athletes will give their best.
“We know we can come first because we are trained, prepared, fully supported, and mobilised for the Games. We will not settle for less.
“We are multi-faceted in sports, but we are even more confident in our traditional sports. We are trained to dominate.
“Lagos has the potential to overtake Delta and Bayelsa. Those states have their own traditional strengths, but so do we,” he said.
Travih added that Lagos also enjoys a comparative advantage in other sports that have contributed to their success.
“For us in Lagos State, we have fielded the youngest squad in terms of age. Our swimmers are teenagers from secondary schools, under 16 years — it's an entirely new wave of talent.
“For us in Lagos, it’s about developing and exposing talent at the grassroots level. Looking at our trajectory in athlete development, it’s no secret that we are among the best at discovering talents.
“Our preparatory tournaments have helped shape the team, and they are more than ready. We want to surpass our previous achievements in terms of medal haul,” he said.
