2025 NSF: Didih, Nyong, wins gold

Ruth Nyong of Rivers State and African Champion Omolola Onome Didih of Lagos State were the outstanding performers on Day 2 of the Weightlifting event at the ongoing Ogun 2024 National Sports Festival, tagged the Gateway Games.


Both weightlifters put up impressive performances, winning a total of four gold medals and two silver medals for their states in the women’s 49kg and 55kg categories.


In the Women’s 49kg class, Nyong won two gold medals and one silver. She lifted 75kg to claim gold in the snatch and secured her second gold with a total lift of 167kg.


Originally from Akwa Ibom State, Nyong also earned Rivers State an additional silver medal with her 92kg lift in the Clean & Jerk.


In the same weight class, Ebele Chukwu Vanessa Agbah of Delta State won gold in the Clean & Jerk with a 93kg lift and took silver with a total lift of 164kg.


In the snatch, Quadri Zainab of Lagos earned silver with a 72kg lift, while Adamma Dorcas Anyimba of Kano took bronze with 71kg.


Anyimba also secured a bronze medal with her total lift of 157kg. Monica Uweh of Ogun State finished with a bronze medal in the Clean & Jerk, lifting 88kg.


In the Women’s 55kg category, African Games gold medallist Omolola Onome Didih of Lagos won two gold medals in the snatch and total with lifts of 93kg and 205kg, respectively. However, she was beaten in the Clean & Jerk by the determined Theresa Daniel Okon of Akwa Ibom State, who lifted 113kg to claim gold. Didih finished just one kilogram behind, earning silver and her third medal.


Temidayo Jegede of Kano claimed two silver medals and one bronze, adding to the pyramid state’s medal haul. She lifted 77kg in the snatch and had a total lift of 175kg for two silvers before taking bronze in the Clean & Jerk with 98kg. Joy Chima from Lagos took the remaining two bronze medals with lifts of 71kg and 168kg in the snatch and total.


Meanwhile, 2023 African Games gold medallist King Kalu of Cross River State and Esther Amarachi Chijoke of the Invited Junior Athletes (IJA) combined to win five gold medals for their states in the men’s 55kg category.


In the Men’s 55kg, Kalu secured three gold medals for Cross River with a total lift of 215kg, comprising a 94kg snatch and a 121kg Clean & Jerk.


Elechi Nnadozie Elvis of Bayelsa State won silver in the snatch with a 93kg lift, while Abayomi Adeleye of Ekiti State took bronze with 92kg.


Tobi Ishola of Oyo claimed silver in the Clean & Jerk with 118kg and earned another bronze medal in the total with 206kg.


Representing Bayelsa State, John Solomon won bronze in the Clean & Jerk with 117kg and silver in the total with 207kg.


In the women’s 45kg, Esther Amarachi Chijoke of the Invited Junior Athletes (IJA) captured two gold medals in the Clean & Jerk and total with lifts of 82kg and 146kg, respectively, and added a silver medal in the snatch with 64kg.


Ronke Olarinoye (Lagos) was the overall runner-up in the women’s 45kg, winning gold in the snatch with 65kg and bronze in the total with 140kg.


Christiana Alloma of Rivers State won two silver medals and a bronze. She earned bronze in the snatch with a 61kg lift, and silver medals in the Clean & Jerk (81kg) and total (142kg).
