Defending champions of the National Sports Festival, Team Delta, have swiftly begun their title defense after climbing to the top of the medals table and dethroning Team Cross River, who had earlier raced to the top of the medals table of the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games Ogun 2024. Team Cross River claimed 3 gold medals in the men’s 55kg weightlifting category taking place in Sagamu through King Kalu Ufiem, who clinched all three gold medals after lifting 94 kg.
Team Delta rose to the top after winning 2 gold medals in the female Kungfu demonstration through Confidence Onyema and Favour Mike, along with Edirin Agha, who claimed gold and silver in weightlifting.
The Invited Junior Athletes (IJA), who had claimed 2 gold medals on the first day of the weightlifting event, are now third on the table with 2 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze medals, followed by Team Lagos, which has 1 gold and 1 bronze medal. Team Bayelsa and Team Rivers both have 2 silver and 1 bronze medal each, tying them for 5th place.
Team Oyo is in 7th place after picking up 1 silver and 1 bronze medal, while Team Ekiti completes the medals table after collecting 1 bronze medal on day 2 of the weightlifting event.
In another development, Team FCT began its quest for a gold medal in the men’s football event in strong fashion after crushing Team Borno 4-1 in the group opening match, with Team Lagos claiming all three points without kicking a ball after Team Ondo failed to honor their match against Team Lagos.
Team Ebonyi also began its quest for a gold medal in the men’s football event after overcoming hard-fighting hosts Team Ogun 2-1, with Team Kano also beating Team Kwara by the same scoreline.
The Team Delta female football side cruised past Team Enugu 3-0 to commence their quest for the gold medal.
The games continue with cycling, cricket, and other sports taking center stage.
