Sprint sensation Favour Oghenetejiri Ashe has arrived in Uyo ahead of the maiden edition of the Niger Delta Sports Festival.
The U.S.-based Ashe, who burst onto the Nigerian athletics scene in 2022 after becoming the 12th Nigerian to run sub-10 seconds in the 100 meters, arrived in Uyo on Tuesday alongside his Team Delta counterparts for the festival. He is one of the top favorites to claim gold in the 100 meters and 200 meters men’s events.
Ashe, who led Nigeria's men’s relay team at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Oregon, has been in strong form this year and is expected to improve on his performances when he competes against other athletes from the Niger Delta states.
The sprinter, nicknamed the "Nigerian Nightmare," has a personal best of 9.94 seconds in the 100 meters.
He has yet to begin the current season and is expected to use the Niger Delta Sports Festival as his season opener, with plans to return to the World Championships later in the year.
The opening ceremony of the games is expected to take place at the Uyo Township Stadium, with over 4,000 athletes and officials slated to attend.
