Nigeria’s outstanding performance at the 2025 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Ahmedabad, India, reached new heights as Islamiyat Yusuf (women’s 69kg), Sarah Matthew (women’s 77kg junior and senior), and Adedapo Adeleke Opadeji (men’s 79kg) delivered a glittering medal haul of three golds and one bronze, cementing Team Nigeria’s place on the global stage.
In the women’s 69kg division, Islamiyat Yusuf was flawless, lifting 105kg in the snatch and 131kg in the clean & jerk for a commanding total of 236kg, earning Nigeria’s first gold of the day.
Rising star Sarah Matthew followed with a remarkable display in the 77kg category, where she claimed two gold medals — in both the junior and senior divisions. With lifts of 108kg (snatch) and 128kg (clean & jerk) for a total of 236kg, she underlined her growing reputation as one of Nigeria’s brightest prospects.
In the men’s 79kg class, Adedapo Adeleke Opadeji fought bravely against tough opposition to clinch bronze, finishing behind Ajaya Babu of India (gold) and Malaysia’s Muhammad Erry Hidayat (silver).
Nigeria’s medal rush builds on earlier successes. On Wednesday, Joseph Edidiong Umoafia, the reigning African Games champion, secured silver in the men’s 71kg with a combined lift of 316kg (146kg snatch + 170kg clean & jerk), missing gold by just one kilogram to India’s Ajith Narayana. Ruth Imoleayo Ayodele also claimed bronze in the women’s 63kg with a total of 212kg (95kg + 117kg).
This followed Tuesday’s results, where Ruth Asuquo Nyong picked up silver and Omolola Onome delivered gold for Nigeria.
So far, Team Nigeria has secured four gold, two silver, and two bronze medals at the 30th Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships — with several lifters still in action, raising hopes of an even greater medal tally.
