2024 NSF: Nasarawa govt. holds farewell ceremony for contingents

The Nasarawa State Government hosted a send-off ceremony for the State’s contingent for the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival, held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.


The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Kwanta Yakubu, who led top officials of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development to the closing of the ten-day camping session for the State’s athletes at the Government Special Schools, Lafia, and the onward send-off ceremony, commended the athletes for their dedication and commitment, urging them to maintain their focus and determination as they represent the State at the National Sports Festival.


He expressed confidence in the athletes’ abilities to excel and bring glory to the State.


While thanking Governor Abdullahi Sule for making adequate funds available for the camping session and the successful outing at the Sports Festival, Kwanta reaffirmed the Government’s support for sports development, disclosing that necessary resources and infrastructure have been provided to help the athletes excel at the multi-sport biennial national event.


The Head of Coaches, Bashir Musa Bassey, and the Athletes’ Captain, Beauty Timothy, thanked Governor Abdullahi Sule and the Ministry of Youth and Sports for ensuring the participation of Team Nasarawa at the Sports Festival, promising to make the State proud by winning major medals.


They reaffirmed that they would be worthy ambassadors throughout their stay in Abeokuta.


Team Nasarawa traveled to Abeokuta with a total contingent of 300 members, comprising 160 athletes, eleven Sports Secretaries, 32 Coaches and accompanying referees, 34 accompanying officials, twelve security personnel, medical personnel, and journalists.


The State will feature in twenty-two sports events, namely Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Chess, Cycling, Darts, Golf, Hockey (Female), Judo, Karate, Kung-Fu, Para Athletics, and Scrabble.


Others are Table Tennis, Para Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Trado-sports (Ayo and Dambe), Para Powerlifting, Volleyball (Female), Weightlifting, and Wrestling.


The send-off ceremony was also attended by the Chief Whip and Member representing Akwanga North Constituency at the State House of Assembly, Hon. Larry Ven-Bawa; Permanent Secretary, Dr. Ibrahim Adamu Alhassan; Directors and Senior Staff of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development; as well as members of the press.


The 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival will be held from 16th to 30th May 2025, with the opening ceremony scheduled for Sunday, 18th May 2025.


About ten thousand athletes and coaches, drawn from the 36 States of the Federation and FCT Abuja, are expected to feature in the Festival, with athletes competing in 33 sports.


President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will declare the Festival, tagged ‘GATEWAY GAMES 2024’, open alongside the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, States’ Governors, and other high-profile personalities from across Nigeria and the international community at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Sunday, 18th May 2025.


The Sports Festival is also open to elite athletes.


Delta State won the last edition held in Asaba, the State Capital, in 2022.
