Enugu is counting down to a major sporting spectacle as the Enugu City International Marathon enters its final 48 hours, with the Coal City preparing to welcome elite runners, thousands of participants, visitors and global attention on Saturday, Aug. 29, 2026.

For a city preparing to host a world-class road race, the atmosphere is already electric. The Marathon Expo is in full operation, athletes are collecting their race kits, brands are activating across the city, while hotels, restaurants, transport operators and other businesses are gearing up for a busy weekend.

Organisers say preparations have reached an advanced stage, with the race route measured and certified and medical, security and logistics teams completing their final operational checks.

Technology will also play a central role in the event, with race timing systems and broadcast infrastructure put in place to deliver live coverage to audiences across Nigeria and beyond.

Leading media organisations, including Arise TV, Channels TV and AIT, are already making preparations to bring the action to a wider audience, while the International Conference Centre serves as the official World Press Centre.

As part of the countdown, a World Press Conference is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Friday at the International Conference Centre, where organisers, partners and elite athletes will interact with journalists and provide final insights ahead of Saturday’s race.

The Local Organising Committee described the event as a defining moment for Enugu and a demonstration of the city’s capacity to stage an internationally recognised sporting event.

“This is where preparation meets proof,” the committee said. “Enugu has done the work. Now we show the world what a Nigerian city can deliver.”

Beyond athletics, organisers see the marathon as a platform for economic activity, tourism promotion and city branding.

The influx of athletes, officials, spectators and visitors is expected to generate increased activity for hospitality businesses, restaurants, transport operators, vendors and other enterprises, while creating opportunities for local employment and entrepreneurship.

The race will also offer Enugu an opportunity to showcase its landmarks, neighbourhoods and cultural identity to a wider audience as runners make their way through the city's streets.

For many participants, however, the marathon will mean more than competition and prize money. It will bring together professional athletes chasing personal bests, amateur runners pursuing personal goals, volunteers supporting the event and residents lining the route to cheer them on.

Thousands of volunteers, medical personnel, students and spectators are expected to contribute to the atmosphere, transforming the race course into a celebration of sport and community.

With just two days to the big day, the message from the organisers is clear: the runners are ready, the city is prepared and Enugu is waiting to take its place on the international road-running stage.

On Saturday, the Coal City will come alive under one banner — “A City in Motion.”
