16th Africa Junior Swimming Championship: Nigeria's swimming prodigy, Abduljabar, breaks African record

Posted : 02 May 2025

Nigeria's swimming sensation Abduljabar Adama delivered a historic performance on Friday in the men’s 50m butterfly to win Nigeria’s first gold medal at the ongoing 16th Africa Junior Swimming Championship.

Adama secured the gold at the Egypt International Olympic City Aquatic Centre, breaking the event’s record twice in a single day.

In the morning heats, Adama stunned spectators by clocking 24.19 seconds, breaking the existing championship record. But the 19-year-old wasn't finished.

In the evening finals, Abduljabar Adama raised the bar even higher, powering through the water in a blistering 23.89 seconds to win gold and rewrite the record books once again.

This achievement solidifies Adama’s status as one of Africa’s brightest swimming talents. His performance in Cairo follows a strong showing earlier this month at the Aquatics GB Championships in London, where he posted a personal best of 23.81 seconds, further confirming his consistency on the international stage.

Adama’s gold medal is a significant milestone not only for his personal career but also for Team Nigeria, which is aiming for a strong overall finish at the five-day event, running from April 30 to May 4, 2025.

The championship has drawn elite junior swimmers from across the continent, making Adama’s double record-breaking feat even more remarkable.

With this early success, Nigeria has sent a clear message to Africa’s swimming elite: they are here to compete and to win.

More events are scheduled throughout the week, with Team Nigeria expected to make further podium appearances.

As the medals continue to be contested in Cairo, all eyes will remain on Abduljabar Adama — Nigeria’s new golden boy in the pool.
