16 Days to Glasgow 2026: Team Nigeria Charged to Embrace Discipline in Medal Quest

Posted : 06 July 2026

With just 16 days remaining before the start of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, Team Nigeria athletes have been challenged to make discipline, unity, and professionalism the foundation of their pursuit of podium success.

The charge came from former Commonwealth Games champion and Chairman of the Elite Athletes Development and Podium Board, Yusuf Alli, during Team Nigeria's first official meeting at their training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Alli stressed that talent alone would not be enough to achieve success on the international stage, insisting that strict adherence to camp routines and personal discipline would be vital in the athletes' quest for medals.

According to him, athletes must remain committed to meal schedules, training sessions, transportation arrangements, and adequate recovery, describing such habits as the hallmarks of champions.

"Success at this level is built on discipline. Every minute matters. Be punctual for meals, respect the bus schedule, arrive early for training, and give your body the rest it needs to recover.

"These are not ordinary routines; they are the habits of champions. If we all do the little things right, the medals will take care of themselves," Alli said.

The former long jump star also reminded the athletes of the responsibility that comes with representing Nigeria, urging them to compete with courage while displaying exemplary conduct throughout the Games.

"When you wear the colours of Nigeria, you represent more than yourselves; you carry the hopes and pride of millions of Nigerians.

"Compete with courage, support one another, and let your conduct, both on and off the field, reflect the excellence our country is known for. We want Team Nigeria to be remembered not only for winning medals but also for professionalism and character," he added.

Alli brings a wealth of Commonwealth Games experience, having won medals for Nigeria at the 1986 Games before capturing the men's long jump gold medal at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland, New Zealand.

Also speaking to the athletes, Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) Second Vice President, Akuchukwu Aghazu, called on the team to remain focused and united as they prepare for the multi-sport event.

He urged the athletes to avoid distractions, support one another, and uphold the values of Team Nigeria throughout the competition.

"Discipline and focus must guide everything you do from now until the end of the Games. Stay committed to your goals, avoid distractions, and remember that you are stronger together than as individuals.

"Look out for one another, protect each other, and uphold the values of Team Nigeria wherever you go. Unity will be one of our greatest strengths in Glasgow," Aghazu said.

Team officials remain confident that the athletes' commitment to discipline, teamwork, and professionalism will translate into strong performances when the 2026 Commonwealth Games take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2.

With preparations entering the final stretch, Team Nigeria will be aiming to convert its disciplined approach into podium finishes when competition begins. The emphasis on unity, professionalism, and focus is expected to play a key role in the team's quest for success at Glasgow 2026.
