14-yr old first-timer clinches 10km Owan Marathon race

Posted : 07 January 2025

Elizabeth Olumide, a 14-year-old girl from Edo, has won the female race of the 4th annual 10km Owan marathon with a time of 1 hour and 24 minutes.

Ruth Abu and Precious Orogun, also 14, from Edo and Delta respectively, finished in second and third place, clocking 1 hour 27 minutes and 1 hour 37 minutes. The race took place in Edo.

Olumide, speaking after the race, stated that this was her first time competing and expressed hope of securing an athletics scholarship to study nursing abroad.

In the male category, 16-year-old Embah Godspower from Delta emerged as the winner with a time of 1 hour.

Godspower was closely followed by Paul Osadebame and Aliu Mirror, who finished in second and third place with times of 1 hour 2 seconds and 1 hour 57 seconds, respectively.

Godspower attributed his victory to rigorous training and stated his ambition to represent Delta and Nigeria in both national and international competitions.

Meanwhile, athletics coach Oluyemi Ayopo commended Christopher Ojo, the organiser of the race, for providing a platform for teenagers to showcase their talents.

Ayopo noted that the annual marathon had produced athletes who have gone on to represent Edo at national events.

"Through this event, about 20 athletes discovered in previous editions were sponsored to the annual Access Marathon in Lagos.

"Additionally, an athlete discovered during the second edition of this event is currently on a scholarship in America.

"We need more individuals like Ojo to help nurture the abundant talents hidden in our communities," he said.

Mr. Lucky Ehigiator, Secretary of the Nigeria Association of Athletics Technical Officials, advised the organiser to register the annual race to elevate it to an international level.

He praised the organiser for raising the standard of the event in its fourth edition.

"The organiser, Christopher Ojo, has promised to ensure that the winners of this year's race are exposed to competitive events as part of their development," he said.
