Posted : 22 March 2024

Ace sprinter, Itsekiri Usheoritse, and his team have secured gold in the 4x100m relay event at the ongoing African Games, marking a historic moment for the Nigerian athletics contingent.

Usheoritse, visibly elated by the victory, shared his emotions and plans for the future in a post-race interview on the sidelines.

“Right now, I can see a lot of congratulations. I feel good, I am really happy with it. It was a medal we had been longing for.

“I’ve never won gold so winning gold for the first time, I am really happy,” expressed Usheoritse, reflecting on the significance of the achievement.

Looking ahead, Usheoritse outlined his next steps in preparation for future competitions, notably the Olympics.

“We have a long season, there is the Olympics to prepare for and that’s what we’re going for.

I’m based in Canada. I am going back to Canada after the games and I will continue my preparation. This is my last race at the African Games,” he stated.

Addressing his fellow Nigerians who have supported him throughout his journey, Usheoritse had a message of gratitude and encouragement.

“I would say stay woke, stay awake. We just started. This gold medal looks good on us and we’ll keep bringing it back home,” he affirmed, acknowledging the unwavering support from his compatriots.

Itsekiri Usheoritse also noted the significance of the victory, describing it as sweet revenge for years of Ghana’s dominance over Nigeria in athletics.

The gold medal not only symbolizes individual triumph but also serves as a testament to the resilience and determination of the Nigerian athletics team.

As Itsekiri Usheoritse and his teammates bask in the glory of their achievement, they remain focused on their ultimate goal of representing Nigeria on the global stage and bringing home further accolades.

With their sights set on future competitions, including the Olympics, the Nigerian athletics team is poised to continue making waves and inspiring a nation.
