Fifth seed Ons Jabeur displayed remarkable resilience once again, battling her way into the US Open's last 16 with a hard-fought three-set victory over Marie Bouzkova. The match, which lasted nearly three hours, saw Jabeur, last year's runner-up, triumph 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Her opponent, Czech 31st seed Bouzkova, struggled with a thigh injury during the contest.
Tunisian player Jabeur, aged 29, had been grappling with illness throughout her time in New York. After her victory, she expressed her determination, saying, "Hopefully I'll continue with this warrior symbol." She emphasized her love for the fight and her trust in her body's resilience, emphasizing her readiness to go the distance and play three sets without issue. She also acknowledged the challenging start due to her illness, noting that the tournament was testing her and revealing her inner strength.
Jabeur's next opponent at Flushing Meadows, as she pursues her first major title, will be Chinese 23rd seed Zheng Qinwen. Meanwhile, in the night session on Louis Armstrong Stadium, Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova had a swift victory, needing only 56 minutes to defeat Ekaterina Alexandrova.
The Czech ninth seed secured a convincing 6-2, 6-1 win against the Russian 22nd seed in a match that began around 23:30 local time. Vondrousova's next challenge will be American world number 59 Peyton Stearns, who put an end to the run of British number one Katie Boulter.
