Kudermetova shocks Swiatek: Advances to Toray Pan Pacific Open semifinals

Posted : 29 September 2023
Veronika Kudermetova clinched a monumental victory in the quarterfinals of the Toray Pan Pacific Open by defeating the second-seeded Iga Swiatek. This triumph marked a significant milestone in Kudermetova's career, as she secured her first-ever win against the formidable Swiatek.

The match unfolded in thrilling fashion, with Kudermetova ultimately prevailing 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, earning her a coveted spot in the tournament's semifinals.

Kudermetova's journey to this remarkable victory had its fair share of challenges. Entering the match, she was riding an upward trajectory after a somewhat frustrating summer season. Her back-to-back wins over opponents like Harriet Dart and Kayla Day marked her first consecutive victories since the grass season in Berlin.

Notably, her win over Swiatek marked her second triumph over a Top 2 player this season, having previously defeated Aryna Sabalenka.

In the initial set, Kudermetova displayed an impressive level of dominance. Capitalizing on a slow start from the World No. 2, she raced to a commanding 4-0 lead in just 17 minutes.

Swiatek, on the other hand, struggled to find her rhythm, managing only three winners while committing a staggering 20 unforced errors. In contrast, Kudermetova maintained a cleaner, more disciplined game, with three winners and just nine unforced errors.

Swiatek, known for her resilience, began to regain her form towards the end of the first set. Although she couldn't break Kudermetova's serve in the two games where she had break point opportunities, she carried her improved level of play into the second set.

Swiatek impressively won eight of the first nine points and secured her first break of the match. She continued to build on this momentum, ultimately taking the set and forcing a decisive third set.

The decider proved to be a fierce battle, with both players vying for supremacy. Kudermetova's unwavering belief in herself and her ability to conquer Swiatek paid off as she secured a historic victory.

The win propelled her into the semifinals, where she is set to face off against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Saturday, promising another thrilling chapter in her journey through the Toray Pan Pacific Open.
