Great Britain secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over Australia in their Davis Cup Finals campaign. Debutant Jack Draper and Dan Evans were the heroes, both winning their respective singles matches. In the first tie, Draper triumphed in a closely contested match against Thanasi Kokkinakis, winning 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
Evans faced a tough challenge against Alex de Minaur, the 12th-ranked player globally. He claimed victory with a score of 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 in the second singles match.
Despite a loss in the doubles match, where Evans and Neal Skupski fell to Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell with a score of 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, Britain had already secured the tie victory. However, the doubles loss could be crucial when determining qualification later in the tournament.
Britain, Australia, France, and Switzerland are part of the group stage event held at Manchester's AO Arena. They compete in a round-robin format, with the top two teams advancing to the 'Final Eight' knockout stage in Malaga in November.
Upcoming fixtures for Britain include a match against Switzerland on Friday and a final tie against France on Sunday. France currently leads the group after winning all three matches in their opening tie against Switzerland.
British captain Leon Smith surprised many by selecting Draper and Evans as the singles players over Cameron Norrie and Andy Murray. Norrie, the highest-ranked British player, has struggled to match his previous form, while Murray, despite a resurgence in his career, acknowledged that the selection was based on current form.
The decision paid off as Draper and Evans delivered a victory against last year's competition runners-up, Australia. Draper, in particular, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and trusted from the captain.
