Abandoned Ajax vs. Feyenoord match to resume behind closed doors amid controversy
Posted : 25 September 2023
The abandoned Eredivisie match between Ajax and Feyenoord will resume behind closed doors, confirmed by the Dutch FA (KNVB). Feyenoord led 3-0 when the game was stopped due to flares and fireworks thrown onto the pitch.
The match will be completed at 14:00 local time with no fans present. Ajax's match against FC Volendam, scheduled for Wednesday, has been postponed.
Ajax disagrees with the decision and may consider legal action, suggesting the earliest resumption should be in early November.
The KNVB defends the decision for the sake of fairness and league integrity.
The match, known as De Klassieker, had already been paused twice before being postponed due to fan misconduct.
Ajax fans ignored warnings against lighting fireworks. Police used tear gas on unruly fans outside the stadium, and some Ajax supporters tried to re-enter the ground.
Feyenoord's players and staff remained in their dressing room for safety. Ajax apologized for their fans' behavior, and coach Maurice Steijn called it a dark day for the club.
Ajax is currently 14th in the Eredivisie, having failed to qualify for the Champions League last season.
