Germany sacks Hansi Flick as manager amid disappointing results
Posted : 10 September 2023
Hansi Flick has been sacked as the manager of the Germany national football team following a 4-1 friendly defeat by Japan in Wolfsburg. This dismissal marks the first time a Germany manager has been sacked since the role was established in 1926. Germany has faced a string of disappointing results, losing four of their last five games under Flick's tenure, with only 12 wins in his 25 matches since taking over from Joachim Low in August 2021.
Rudi Voller, who managed the team from 2000 to 2004, will take temporary charge of the team for an upcoming friendly against France. The 63-year-old Voller, a former Germany striker, was appointed as the director of the German national side in February and will have the assistance of Hannes Wolf and Sandro Wagner.
Germany is set to host the men's European Championship next year, but the team has been in disarray. Bernd Neuendorf, the president of the German FA, emphasized the need for a fresh impetus after the recent disappointing results, especially with the European Championship on the horizon. Neuendorf expressed his respect for Flick but stressed that sporting success was paramount.
Flick, who previously served as Low's assistant manager with Germany from 2006 to 2014, started his tenure with eight successive wins but saw the team's form decline, culminating in an early exit from the 2022 World Cup group stage. Flick's assistants, Marcus Sorg and Danny Rohl, have also been dismissed.
Germany's victories in the past year have been limited to Oman, Costa Rica, and Peru. Flick's dismissal is surprising, given his highly successful stint at Bayern Munich, where he won 70 out of 86 games in charge and secured a treble of domestic league and cup titles and the Champions League in the 2019-20 season.
The German FA intends to announce Flick's full-time replacement as soon as possible. Julian Nagelsmann, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, Rudi Voller, and former Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner are among the names being considered for the role.
