Ajax's Director of Football, Sven Mislintat, has revealed his past interest in signing Chuba Akpom for Borussia Dortmund, but the Nigerian striker chose to remain at Arsenal at the time. Mislintat, who previously worked for Dortmund and is now with Ajax, successfully secured Akpom's transfer to the Dutch club, beating competition from various European clubs.
Middlesbrough agreed to let go of Akpom for a fee of €12.3 million, with additional performance-related add-ons. Akpom's impressive performance in the EFL Championship last season, where he scored 28 goals in 38 appearances, earned him the title of top scorer in the division.
Mislintat noted that he had pursued Akpom's signing when he was 19, aiming to bring him to Borussia Dortmund. He expressed satisfaction with Akpom's current progress and praised his ability to score consistently, especially in a competitive league like the English Championship.
Mislintat also highlighted Akpom's versatility on the field, underlining his capability to play as a number 9, support striker, winger, and attacking midfielder for Ajax Amsterdam.
