Ukrainian High Jumper Yaroslava Mahuchich wins gold amid war and displacement: A triumph of resilience

Posted : 06 September 2023
Yaroslava Mahuchich, the Ukrainian high jump athlete, emerged victorious in a tightly contested competition at the World Championships in Budapest, clinching gold with a jump of 2.01 meters. This remarkable achievement goes beyond the sports arena as Mahuchich's journey to success has been marked by the backdrop of war and displacement.

Fleeing her hometown of Dnipro due to the Russian invasion, Mahuchich left behind her family and trained in Germany and Belgium. In Budapest, she proudly displayed the colors of the Ukrainian flag in her eye makeup, symbolizing her unwavering commitment to her homeland.

Before the competition, Mahuchich shared her emotional turmoil, struggling to focus on her athletic pursuits while her country was at war. Yet, she recognized the importance of her role as an athlete in conveying Ukraine's story to the world.

Mahuchich and her family embarked on a grueling 2,000km journey to reach safety, encountering checkpoints, sirens, explosions, and fires along the way. Despite the hardships, she demonstrated exceptional resilience by winning gold at the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade.

While Mahuchich reunited with her mother and sister in Germany and later Belgium, her hometown faced devastating bombings, resulting in numerous casualties. She emphasized that athletes like her feel compelled to perform at their best, dedicating their victories to the Ukrainian people and soldiers protecting their homeland.

Mahuchich expressed her clear stance on Russian and Belarusian athletes' participation in international competitions, calling Russia a "terrorist state" and condemning athletes who remain silent. For her, they do not have the right to compete on the world stage.

Despite her personal struggles and the ongoing war in Ukraine, Mahuchich remains committed to her role as an ambassador for her country. She believes that excelling in sports allows her to tell the world about Ukraine's plight and resilience.
